When people first start writing articles for money, and they begin using an affiliate marketing program or two, they get excited about all the money that is waiting to be earned. And they should be. Controlling your wealth is a powerful feeling. But, once of the things people easily forget about is their own reputation.
Anyone can create an online presence, slap together a handful of posts that recommend products. But what good is it if you can’t stand behind the product you are marketing? It never feels good to con or scam people, and that has to be considered when you start to market for money.
Whenever I write posts and want to include an affiliate link, I always make sure it is something I can stand behind, or that I have used personally. It isn’t always possible to get first-hand experience with every product you are going to market, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot find reliable information.
The product’s website is always going to be a good first place to start. I’ll be honest, if it looks too scammy or is full of bad grammar and incorrectly spelled words, I willusually pass it up. The $20 I might make a couple of times a month from that product isn’t worth directing my readers or clients to a poorly designed site. That reflects poorly on me.
Another way to look for reviews is to check out reputble sites that allow for customer reviews. Amazon.com is a great place to start, and a lot of retail stores will have customer review sections as well. This is a great place to look for valuable information because you can glean a lot of honest information about a product.
Regardless of how you get your information, being an honest affiliate, who seeks to always provide information first and sell second will earn you more money over the long haul. Instead of “getting” people to buy products, they “want” to buy a product. It helps your pocketbook and your reputation when affiliate marketing is done with a clean conscience.
